Painting in Nature's Valley
Nature's Valley is the most difficult drying environment we work in. The village sits in a forested valley behind the dunes, surrounded by indigenous forest on three sides, and air movement through it is limited. Humidity stays high, shade is close to total on many properties, and evaporation is slow. Paint that would be touch-dry in two hours in an open street can still be soft here in the late afternoon.
The practical consequence is that recoat intervals cannot be run off the tin. Forcing a second coat onto a first that has not properly released its moisture gives a soft, slow-curing film that marks easily and fails early. A Nature's Valley exterior takes more days than the same house would elsewhere, and any contractor quoting it on a standard programme has not worked in the valley.
What Painting Costs in Nature's Valley
| Job | Guide price | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Full exterior, plastered 3-bed | R30,000 - R54,000 | Includes fungicidal treatment and extended drying time. |
| Timber home or clad exterior, per m2 | R200 - R380 | Wash, treat, sand where required, penetrating sealer system. |
| Algae, moss and mould treatment, per m2 | R30 - R60 | Biocide with full dwell time, then rinse. Run-off contained. |
| Deck and balustrade, strip and re-seal, per m2 | R250 - R450 | Horizontal timber suffers most in this humidity. |
| Roof clean, treat and recoat, approx. 120m2 | R16,000 - R30,000 | Moss and lichen removal before any coating goes on. |
| Interior repaint, 3-bed | R16,000 - R30,000 | Includes managing ventilation in a closed-up valley house. |
Guide ranges for Nature's Valley. Expect a longer programme than the same house would need elsewhere - the extra days are drying time, and they are the difference between a coating that lasts and one that does not.
When to Paint in Nature's Valley
February to May is the only stretch we would recommend for exterior work. It is the warmest and driest part of the year, and in a valley this shaded that margin matters more than it does on an open site. From August through November the combination of rain and standing humidity makes exterior coating close to unproductive.
The daily window is the shortest anywhere we work. Morning damp lifts late and evening moisture returns early, which realistically leaves late morning to mid-afternoon for exterior coats. We plan around that rather than fighting it, and we allow considerably longer between coats than the product label states.
Coatings and Working Practice in a Conservation Setting
Use a premium exterior acrylic with a genuinely effective fungicide, in satin or low-sheen. Matt is the wrong choice here - it is porous, it holds moisture, and in this much shade a matt wall will carry visible growth within two seasons. Timber takes a penetrating exterior sealer on a two year cycle, shorter than most places, because valley damp works on unprotected wood quickly.
The setting also changes how we work. Surrounded by protected forest and with a lagoon and beach below, washings and biocide run-off have to be contained rather than allowed to run off site. We avoid spraying where drift could reach vegetation, use low-odour and lower-VOC products where the specification allows, and carry waste out. A normal building-site approach is not appropriate here.
Nature's Valley - What the Job Involves
- Moisture and drying conditions measured rather than assumed from appearance
- Biocide treatment with full dwell time on shaded walls, roofs and decks
- Containment of washings and run-off, given the forest, lagoon and beach below
- Extended intervals between coats, built into the programme from the start
- Timber condition, particularly horizontal surfaces and anything near ground contact
- Gutters and roof debris, which in this much tree cover block quickly
