Painting in Sedgefield
Sedgefield sits on a narrow strip between Swartvlei and the sea, and that position sets the whole painting job. The water table is high, most homes are single-storey on sandy ground, and salt-carrying air reaches every street in the village. The two problems we are called out for most often here are rising damp on ground-floor walls and paint that has chalked off the seaward elevation years before the rest of the house.
The practical consequence is that a Sedgefield repaint is rarely just paint. On a wall showing tide marks up to 800mm, the plaster usually has to come off to sound material, a damp-resistant render goes back on, and only then does the coating system start. Skipping that step is the single most common reason a Sedgefield house needs repainting again within eighteen months.

Guide ranges for Sedgefield homes, including labour and quality materials. Damp work is always priced after we have seen the wall - anyone quoting damp repairs over the phone is guessing.
When to Paint in Sedgefield
Sedgefield does not have a dry season the way Cape Town does. Rain falls in every month of the year, so the question is not which season is dry but which stretch has the fewest wet days and the lowest humidity. That is February through to May. April and May in particular give warm surfaces, long enough gaps between fronts, and overnight temperatures that stay above 10°C.
Avoid September through November if you can. Those are the wettest weeks of the Sedgefield year and the ones most likely to cost you a half-finished elevation. Whatever month you book, the daily window matters as much as the season: heavy dew sits on walls here until mid-morning, so exterior coats should not start before about 09:00 and the last coat should be on by 15:00 so the film sets before evening moisture comes back down.
Paint That Lasts in Sedgefield
For exterior walls within a few streets of the beach or the lagoon, use a mica-reinforced or premium acrylic exterior coating - Plascon Micatex, Dulux Weatherguard or an equivalent. These hold up against salt and UV far better than standard exterior PVA, which is what most failing Sedgefield paintwork turns out to be.
Choose a low-sheen or satin finish rather than a dead matt. Matt film is porous, it grips airborne salt and dirt, and on Sedgefield's shaded southern walls it holds moisture long enough for algae to take. A low-sheen surface sheds both and can be hosed down. Any wall with green or black growth needs a fungicidal wash and a full rinse before priming, not just a pressure clean.
What We Check Before Quoting in Sedgefield
- Moisture readings at the base of every ground-floor wall - the high water table here makes rising damp far more likely than it is inland
- Whether the existing coating is a genuine exterior acrylic or cheap PVA, which determines whether we can overcoat or have to strip
- Salt crystallisation on seaward elevations, which has to be washed off rather than painted over
- Condition of fibre-cement roof sheets and whether they are sound enough to coat
- Timber window frames and decks, which fail here far faster than the walls do
- Gutter and downpipe discharge, since most damp problems in the village trace back to water landing against a wall
