Painting in Wilderness

Wilderness has the most demanding drying conditions on this stretch of coast. Homes sit between the forest, the lakes and the sea, often on steep wooded slopes, and relative humidity here stays high enough for long enough that paint behaves differently than it does inland. Coats take longer to cure, and the consequences of rushing them are more visible.

Two failures follow directly from that humidity. The first is algae and mould on shaded elevations, which is close to universal in Wilderness and needs treating rather than covering. The second is surfactant leaching - the streaky, sticky brown residue that appears when a coat is applied late in the day and dew settles on it before it has cured. Both are avoidable with the right timing, and both are common on jobs done by contractors working to a town schedule.

Guide ranges for Wilderness homes. Steep sites and elevated timber decks are the main things that push a quote toward the top of these ranges - access here costs more than the paint does.

When to Paint in Wilderness

The daily window matters more in Wilderness than the month does. Dew and mist sit on surfaces late into the morning and return early in the evening, which leaves a usable exterior painting window of roughly 09:30 to 15:00 for much of the year. Coats applied outside that window are the ones that streak.

Across the year, February to May gives the best conditions - warm surfaces, fewer rain days and slightly lower humidity. Late winter and spring, from about August to November, are the wettest and least suitable. As a working rule, if the surface is within about 3°C of the dew point, we stop rather than push on, because a film that goes on into settling moisture will not cure properly no matter how good the paint is.

Paint for High-Humidity, Shaded Conditions

Use a premium exterior acrylic with an effective fungicide in a satin or low-sheen finish. Matt is the wrong choice in Wilderness: it is porous, it holds moisture, and shaded walls will green up within a couple of seasons. A slight sheen sheds water and lets you wash the wall down instead of repainting it.

For the timber that Wilderness homes use so heavily - decks, balustrades, cladding, stairs - use a penetrating exterior sealer and keep to a two to three year cycle. Horizontal surfaces such as deck boards and handrail tops take the worst of it and often need attention a year before the vertical cladding does. Treat them as separate items rather than assuming the whole deck fails at once.

Wilderness - What We Plan For

  • Dew point and surface moisture readings rather than assuming a dry-looking wall is dry
  • Fungicidal wash with dwell time on every shaded elevation
  • Access on steep, wooded sites, which frequently needs scaffolding or staging
  • Condition of deck boards and handrail tops separately from vertical cladding
  • Gutter overflow and leaf blockage, a common source of persistent wall damp here
  • Extended drying time between coats, planned into the programme rather than improvised on site

Wilderness Painting Questions

What causes the brown streaks on my newly painted wall?
Surfactant leaching. It happens when a coat is applied too late in the day and dew settles on the film before it has cured, drawing water-soluble ingredients to the surface. It is a timing problem, not a paint fault, and in Wilderness it is entirely preventable.
How often will I need to repaint?
Five to seven years on sunlit elevations with a quality product. Shaded walls will show growth sooner, but a wash-down every couple of years keeps them presentable and delays the full repaint considerably.
Why can you only paint for a few hours a day here?
Because morning dew and evening moisture bracket the working day. Painting outside that window produces streaking and poor adhesion. We would rather take an extra day than hand back a wall that fails in a season.
Do decks need doing more often than walls?
Yes. Horizontal timber takes standing water and direct UV, so deck boards and handrail tops usually need attention on a two to three year cycle while vertical cladding lasts longer. They should be budgeted separately.
Is Wilderness worth the travel from Knysna?
We work here regularly and batch jobs to keep travel costs down. On a full exterior it makes no meaningful difference to your price; on a very small job we may suggest timing it alongside other work in the area.
